The art of public speaking and debating has blossomed at Blue Coat over the last 12 years. We have developed a strong internal structure to foster interest and commitment from the students and we involve ourselves in a network of competitions both national and internationally. Members of Staff run a weekly club at Junior, Middle School and Senior level. In addition weekend training sessions are given to those lucky enough to be chosen to represent the School. Boys and girls not only present Public Speaking evenings for parents, but also compère the many concerts that are held throughout the year. House competitions in both debating and public speaking are fiercely contested. Juniors are encouraged to enter the Woodley Festival, and to provide teams for the Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ Competition. The Middle School are involved in English-Speaking Competitions. The Seniors do all this plus 2 annual international competitions, travelling to a wide range of fascinating countries such as South Africa, Cyprus and a number in South America. The Blue Coat team has won the International Independent Schools competition held in Canada for the past 2 years. Oral presentation is probably more important in the modern age that it ever has been before; Reading Blue Coat School is determined to be at the forefront in giving our students the skills required. |
