The School has a strong musical tradition and the Music Department is housed in a fully equipped Music School.  The department is staffed by a Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music and 15 instrumental teachers.  Tuition is available on all orchestral instruments, piano, electric keyboard, organ, saxophone, guitar, jazz and rock drumming.

Musical activities are organised under the auspices of the Music Society, and includes choirs, orchestra, two wind bands, three jazz bands, rock and pop groups and various chamber ensembles.  Regular termly concerts are held in and out of School and music is prepared for the various school religious services.  Musicals and choral works are presented regularly along with a Biennial Music Festival.
Music Scholarships of up to 25% of the tuition fees may be awarded to pupils who are gifted at music.  Eligibility for a Music Scholarship will depend on the candidate passing the school Entrance Examination.  11+ entry candidates should have reached a minimum of grade three on their first study instrument at the time of application for a Music Scholarship.  Older candidates should be at a minimum of grade five on their first study instrument.

A music scholar will be expected to play a full and willing role in the music life of the School as requested by the Director of Music.

Applications should be accompanied by the appropriate form and a detailed report from the candidate’s first study instrument teacher.  Candidates who are successful in the school Entrance Examination and selected by the Director of Music will be called for an interview and audition at the school.

At the interview and audition the candidates should be prepared to:-

  • Play two contrasting pieces on their first study instrument (minimum of grade three standard) or (grade 5 if applying at 13+ or Sixth Form). If the candidates play a second instrument, they should be prepared to play one item of the standard they have achieved on this instrument.
  • Sing either a song, hymn or carol.  (Accompaniment to be supplied if necessary).
  • Read at sight on the first study instrument.
  • Aural tests.
  • Sing at sight.
  • Viva Voce  (i)  about the composers of the pieces played by the candidate; (ii)  notation employed in the pieces; (iii)  keys and modulations employed in the pieces.

Candidates will be informed of the result at the earliest opportunity.

Further details on each of the awards, including an application form, may be obtained from the Admissions Secretary at the School.
